Library News October 8, 2022

The next story hour will be Friday, October 21 from 10:15 to 11:15 AM.   All children 5 and under are welcome!  We do ask that children 3 or under be attended by an adult.

September was library card sign up month, but remember, you can sign up for a library card anytime during the year!

Now that it is October, and Halloween is coming up, I wanted to highlight some of the spooky selections we have at the library. If you search Mystery in our online catalog, there are over 2000 results.   If you really want to get scared, we have Stephen King books, like “The Shining,” “Misery,” and “The Outsider” which is one of his more recent books.  If you like a classic mystery, there is Agatha Christie.  A good one is “And Then There were None” which is about “Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to an isolated mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die…Which among them is the killer and will any of them survive?”

Other authors of mysteries and thrillers include:  Mary Higgins Clark, Lee Child, James Patterson, Louise Penny, Sue Grafton just to name a few. Maybe you like mysteries, but don’t want any gory details.  We have a large collection known as Cozy Mysteries, which usually include “An amateur sleuth, an unsuspecting victim, a quirky supporting cast, and trail of clues and red herrings.”

Mystery writers for teens and young adults include April Henry, Karen McManus, Natasha Preston, For upper elementary we have the classic Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, A more recent mystery series is Fun Jungle which take place at the nation’s largest zoo.  The Virginia Mysteries series combine mysteries with history.

For younger elementary age, we have Halloween books in the with all your favorite characters: Winnie the Pooh, Clifford, Little Blue Truck and the Berenstein Bears.
