Hello Rugby and Pierce County!
It has been a while since we’ve shared what is happening at Heart of America Library. We have had a busy August!! Let us share a brief re-cap of the month, so far…
August started our Read for Ice Cream promotion with Baldy’s Pizza. We’ve had 24 people read for ice cream as of today. There is still time! Read 10 library books and get a token for an ice cream cone from Baldy’s Pizza. That simple. Anyone can participate!
Book Club discussed the book Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Thank you to everyone who came to discuss this great book. Our next book is If You Tell by Gregg Olsen. You can read a brief description on our website. This book has been read by many people so far and we look forward to the discussion on September 6!
August 7 – 9, Mandie was in Bismarck for the North Dakota State Library Conference. There were many interesting topics covered like book repair, solar eclipse, ND Battle of the Books, time management, crisis preparedness, along with so many more throughout the three days. We cannot wait to implement some of the great ideas that were learned. We are going to start utilizing more of the resources available at the ND State Library. For instance, they offer several STEM kits that we can borrow for use in Story Hour or other activities for our youth. The first one we’ve borrowed is the NASA Sun, Earth, Moon Connections to use for our September 1 Story Hour about the upcoming solar eclipse, but we’ll share more on that later.
Also at the conference we got to tour “behind the scenes” at the ND State Historical Society. They have trunks that they will borrow out to schools and libraries for hands on learning about ND history. Yes, we have requested trunks to come through the school year so our community can check them out and hopefully we all can learn about something about ND. More to come on that, too!
The Library hosted a School Supply Drive all day on August 17 to benefit Ely, Little Flower, and Rugby High School. Our community shared so many wonderful items that were distributed to Our schools on Tuesday, August 22. The Teachers and Student thank you ALL! We plan to make this an annual event.
Our bike winner from the Summer Reading Program, Loucie, finally got her bike on Tuesday, August 22. It took a little while for the bike to arrive, but her smile says it all. Congratulations, Loucie!
We are starting a T(w)eens Read Challenge to run September 1, 2023 to March 1, 2024. T(w)eens age 10 – 19 are asked to read eight (8) books from ten (10) different categories. The categories include Award Nominee, Book to Movie, North Dakota Book, Free Choice, Blue Cover, Library Display, Not a Novel, Recommended by Teacher, BookTok, NDSL Staff Pick. We will distribute information to each of the schools for our t(w)eens to pick up and participate, if they choose. Once books are read, logged, and forms dropped off, their name will be entered into a drawing for a prize.
We are planning on offering Story Hour every Friday starting September 1. The Literacy Committee will be presenting two Fridays each month, and HOA Library or another community group will present. Check out the schedule on our website! Contact Mandie if your group is interested in presenting at our Story Hour.
Whew, we have so much going on and plan on bringing more to you, Our Community. We appreciate your ongoing support.
From, Your HOA Library Staff ~Mandie, Robin, Karen, Angela, and Jason~
